Happening regularly

We're not just here on Sundays. SBC is a centre for the community, and our extensive buildings

are used by local organisations who hire them on a regular basis for a whole range of activities,

from kung fu to yoga and drama classes to workshops from the Leicestershire Dyslexia Association.

We also host our own activities, including Wellbeing Cafe and Messy Church.

Renew Stoneygate Wellbeing Cafe

Start the week with a boost at our wellbeing cafe,

Mondays 10am-12noon.

Refreshments and activities available, including a quiet space for prayer or reflection, and books and toys for children. Chat with others or do your own thing.

Messy Church and Messy Play

Held roughly once a month on a Friday afternoon, our Messy events are fun for all the family. See our Events page for the latest dates or follow us on Facebook or Twitter to keep up with the latest news.

Messy Play is all about open ended crafts and games, a chance to simply have fun together. Light refreshments are also available.

Messy Church is a time for crafts and creativity, plus all age storytelling and singing, ending with a meal together. A vegetarian option is always available, but please let us know in advance of any other dietary requirements.

Everyone is welcome, but all children must be accompanied by a parent or carer.

Messy Events are run jointly with St Mary's Knighton.

Small Groups

A chance to study scripture, reflect on issues of faith and life, and pray together.

We currently have one small group which meets on Tuesday evenings in members' homes.

Leicester Dyslexia Association

The Leicestershire Dyslexia Association started life as a Dyslexia Support Group in 1985. Thirty years ago there was very little help available for dyslexic young people either in school or otherwise, so parents needed to know how to get support for their children and how to help them at home. In 1989 the parents decided to set up a Dyslexia Workshop, the family atmosphere in the Workshop helps young people and their families feel at ease and after a short time in the workshop the young people start to feel more confident and the boost to their self -esteem is very noticeable. They meet other people who are also dyslexic and that helps them to feel more confident because they realise that they are not the only ones.

The Workshop started with just 3 pupils, which quickly increased to 10. By 1992 we had a waiting list, but we were short of space in our premises at the Woodgate Resource Centre. We had also acquired our first computer with some funding from the Health Authority and we needed a dedicated room to leave it set up. So in 1992 we moved to the hall at Stoneygate Baptist Church and set up our first computer room. Since then we have taken over 2 other rooms off the hall as a second computer room and a library and we also use several other rooms in the church buildings as teaching rooms.

Many of our young people have done really well at school despite their difficulties and we have heard of some notable successes from some of our past pupils. At least two have completed a PhD and others are in interesting and responsible jobs.

Teaching workshops

The Association runs a friendly learning workshop in Leicester for children and young people with dyslexia where structured tuition is given in the following topics;

English and Reading
Maths
Typing
Study Skills
Computer Literacy
Information Technology

When do they take place?

Workshops run on Saturday mornings during term time at the Stoneygate Baptist Church, 315 London Road, Leicester. The LDA use the facilities in the church hall, refreshments are available for those wishing to sit and wait during lessons.
